What is Polidocanol Injection?

Polidocanol injection is a prescription medicine used in the treatment with varicose veins. It is used to treat spider veins (varicose veins with a diameter of less than or equal to 1 mm) and simple reticular veins (varicose veins with a diameter of 1 to 3 mm) in the lower limb. Polidocanol is also used to treat large auxiliary saphenous veins that are incompetent, saphenous veins and apparent varicose veins in the vast saphenous vein system above and below the knee.

Polidocanol is a type of sclerosing agent medication. It affects the endothelium of vascular system locally, causing platelets to clump together and form blood clots, as well as scar tissue, which limits the lumen of some larger veins.

Some Tips for Polidocanol

This Polidocanol injection is injected directly into the varicose veins, and the number of injections required is determined by the number of varicose veins present. You will be carefully monitored for any negative side effects while you are being injected.
To avoid clot formation, you should use a compression bandage or stocking for 2 to 3 days following the injection and for 2 to 3 weeks during the day.
Along with using the compression bandage, you should walk for 15-20 minutes after therapy.
For the first 2-3 days after therapy, avoid heavy or intense exertion. Sitting for long periods of time should also be prevented (in a car or airplane).
After treatment, stay out of the sun for at least 2-3 days.
Before using ice or heating pads to the treated limb, follow your doctor's instructions.
