What is Erythromycin Stearate Tablet USP?

Erythromycin Stearate Tablet USP is used in the treatment of bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, Legionnaires' disease (lung infection), and pertussis (whooping cough; an infection that can lead to serious coughing); sexually transmitted infections, such as syphilis; and ear, intestine, gynaecological, urinary tract, and skin problems. It's also used to keep rheumatic fever from returning. Erythromycin belongs to the macrolide antibiotics family of drugs. It works by preventing bacteria from growing.

How to Use

  • Erythromycin is available in the form of a tablet, capsule, delayed release tablet and an oral solution (liquid) to take by mouth.
  • It's commonly taken each six hours (4 times a day), every eight hours (3 times a day), or every 12 hours (2 times a day), both with and without food.
  • Do not chew or crush the capsules or tablets; swallow them entirely with a full glass of water.
  • Even though you feel fine, keep taking Erythromycin Stearate Tablet USP. Stopping erythromycin without consulting your doctor is not a good option.
  • Erythromycin is also used to protect against heart infections in persons who are having dentistry or other operations done. Consider the risks of using this medicine for your illness with your doctor.

Precaution - Erythromycin Stearate Tablet USP

  • If you are allergic to erythromycin, any other drugs, or any of the substances in erythromycin capsules, tablets, or suspension, consult your doctor.
  • If you're receiving astemizole, cisapride, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, pimozide, or terfenadine, inform your doctor. If you are using one or more of these medications, your doctor will probably advise you not to take erythromycin.
  • Tell your doctor about any prescription and OTC medications, nutraceuticals, and herbal products you're using or planning to use. Many other medicines may interfere with erythromycin, so be sure to notify about all of your current medications. Your doctor will need to adjust your prescription dosages or keep a close eye on you for side effects.
  • If you have or have ever had a prolonged QT interval (a heart condition that can cause fainting or abnormal heartbeat), a rapid heartbeat, weak magnesium or potassium levels in the blood, or liver disease, notify your doctor.
  • If you have a pregnancy, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, notify your doctor. Call your doctor when you become pregnant while using Erythromycin Stearate Tablet USP.
  • Tell your dentist that you are receiving erythromycin if you are getting dental surgery.
