Therapeutic Use To treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection

What is Darunavir Tablet?

Darunavir tablet is used in the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in adults and children 3 years of age and older with a pharmacokinetic booster (a medicine that raises the amount of other medications in the body) such as ritonavir or cobicistat, as well as other medications. Darunavir belongs to a class of drugs known as protease inhibitors. It works by lowering HIV levels in the bloodstream. It can reduce your risk of acquiring AIDS and HIV-related illnesses, serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications, as well as practicing safer sex and adopting other lifestyle changes, may reduce the risk of spreading HIV to others.

Darunavir Tablet - How To Use

  • Darunavir is available as a tablet and an oral suspension (liquid) for oral administration. It's commonly taken either once or twice a day with food and ritonavir, or once a day with food and cobicistat.
  • Darunavir should not be taken without ritonavir or cobicistat.
  • Do not break, chew, or crush the tablets/capsules; instead, swallow them whole.
  • Before each usage, give the suspension a good shake to evenly distribute the medication. To get the proper amount of suspension out of the bottle, use the oral dosage syringe that supplied with the drug. The suspension can be directly swallowed from the syringe. After each usage, rinse the syringe with water and leave to dry completely.
  • Darunavir tablet prevents HIV infection but does not eliminate it. Darunavir does not cure HIV infection on its own; it must always be used in conjunction with a full treatment programme. All of the medications provided by your doctor in the treatment of HIV infection must be taken concurrently in order for the medications to continue working to manage the virus.
  • Even you fell healthy, do not discontinue taking darunavir without first consulting your specialist. Your disease may become more difficult to treat if you avoid taking darunavir tablet or skip doses.
  • Darunavir is also used to prevent infection in medical professionals and others who have been exposed to HIV by accident.

How It Works?

Darunavir tablet is an antiretroviral drug. It operates by interacting with a protein (protease) that HIV-infected cells need to produce new viruses. This prevents the spread of new viruses.

Darunavir Tablet - Precautions

Before taking Darunavir
  • If you are allergic to darunavir, sulfa drugs, other medications, or any of the components in darunavir tablet or suspension, inform your doctor right away.
  • If you have renal or liver illness, your doctor may probably advise you not to use darunavir tablet.
  • Tell your doctor about any additional prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or nutraceuticals you're taking. Make a point of mentioning one or more of the following: anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such apixaban, rivaroxaban, and warfarin; antifungals like itraconazole, ketoconazole, and voriconazole; artemether/lumefantrine; HIV medications, such as indinavir, lopinavir/ritonavir, maraviroc, and saquinavir; may interact with a variety of other medications, so be sure to notify about all of your prescriptions, even if they aren't on this list.
  • Your doctor will need to modify your prescription dosages or keep a close eye on you for side effects.
  • If you're using didanosine, take it an hour before or after taking darunavir.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had diabetes or high blood sugar; hepatitis (viral liver swelling), cirrhosis (a disease that causes scarring of the liver tissue), or any other liver disease; or an infection that does not go away or comes and goes.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, notify your doctor. If you have HIV or are receiving darunavir, you should not breastfeed.
  • It's important to be aware that darunavir can decrease the efficiency of contraceptive pills (birth control pills, injections, or implants). Consult your doctor to assist you in selecting a birth control technique that is right for you.
  • Even if you ever do not have diabetes, you should be aware that you may have hyperglycemia (blood sugar spikes) when taking this medicine. If you have any of the symptoms listed while taking darunavir, contact your doctor right away
  • You should be aware that when taking HIV drugs, your immune system may become better and start to fight other infections already present in your body. It's possible that you'll experience symptoms of those infections as a result of this. If you notice any new or worsening problems during your darunavir medication, tell your doctor right away.

Darunavir Tablet - Side Effects

  • It may be difficult to identify whether darunavir tablet is generating some negative effects because it is always used with other HIV drugs. Darunavir, on the other hand, has been linked to diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and headaches.
  • Remember that your doctor provided this medication because he or she believes the advantage to you exceeds the risk of side effects. The majority of people who take this medicine do not have any substantial adverse effects.
  • As your immune system strengthens, it may be able to fight off previous infections, leading disease symptoms to resurface. If your immune system gets overactive, you may have symptoms.
  • This medicine may cause your blood sugar to rise infrequently, which might lead to or exacerbate diabetes. If you have indications of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst or urine, call your doctor straight away.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience any other side effects not listed above.
