What is Vincristine Sulfate Injection?

Vincristine Sulfate Injection is a chemotherapeutic medicine that is used to treat some types of leukaemia (white blood cell cancer), such as acute myeloid leukaemia (AML, ANLL) and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), Hodgkin's lymphoma (Hodgkin's disease), and non-lymphoma. Wilms tumour (a type of kidney cancer that affects children), neuroblastoma (a cancer that starts in nerve cells and affects mostly children), and rhabdomyosarcoma are all treated with vincristine in combination with other chemotherapy medications (cancer that forms in muscles in children). Vincristine belongs to a group of drugs known as vinca alkaloids. It works by reducing or preventing cancer cell development in the body.

How to Use It

  • Vincristine Sulfate Injection is available as a liquid solution that is administered intravenously (into a vein) by a healthcare professional in a medical center. It is typically administered once a week. Treatment duration is determined by the drugs you are receiving, how well your body reacts to them, and the cancer types you have.
  • If you have specific adverse effects, your specialist may need to postpone your treatment or adjust your dose.
  • During your vincristine sulfate injection treatment, your doctor may advise you to use a stool softener or laxative to assist prevent constipation.

Vincristine Sulfate Injection - How It Works

It prevents cancer cells from replicating their genetic material (DNA). As a result, cancer cell development and multiplication are prevented.

Precautions for Vincristine

Before receiving Vincristine Sulfate Injection,
  • If you are sensitive to vincristine, any other medicines, or any of the substances in vincristine sulfate injection, notify your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor about any additional prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or nutritional supplements you're taking or planning to use. Make a point of mentioning one or more of the following: aprepitant; carbamazepine; itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole, and posaconazole; HIV protease inhibitors such as atazanavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir, and saquinavir.
  • Tell your doctor if you're taking any herbal supplements.
  • If you have or have ever had radiation (x-ray) therapy, an infection, or if you have or ever had lung or liver illness, notify your doctor.
  • It's important to understand that it can disrupt a woman's natural menstrual cycle (period) and can temporarily or permanently cease sperm production in men. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to be become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Vincristine Sulfate Injection - Side Effects

  • It is possible to experience nausea, vomiting, weight loss, diarrhoea, mouth sores, headache, or migraine. Talk to your doctor right away if any of these side effects persist or worsen.
  • Constipation, which can be problematic in rare situations, is another side effect of this medicine. Consult your doctor for advice on how to avoid constipation. If you experience constipation, stomach pain, or bloating, contact your doctor right away.
  • It's possible that you'll experience temporary hair loss. After the procedure, normal hair growth should resume.
  • Vincristine Sulfate Injection may make it more difficult for you to fight infections. This may increase your chances of getting a serious (rarely deadly) infection or worsen any infection you already have.
  • If you experience any major side effects, such as vision/hearing changes, mental/mood changes, easy bleeding/bruising, or severe exhaustion, contact your doctor straight away.
