What is Erlotinib Tablet?

Erlotinib tablet is used to cure certain types of non-small cell lung cancer that has progressed to neighbouring tissues or other sections of the body in patients who have failed to respond to at least one other chemotherapy medicine. It is also used in conjunction with another drug "gemcitabine" to cure pancreatic cancer that has progressed to neighbouring tissues or other parts of the body and is resistant to surgery. Erlotinib belongs to the kinase inhibitor class of drugs. It works by preventing cancer cells from multiplying by stopping the action of an aberrant protein. This slows or stops cancer cells from spreading.

Erlotinib Tablet - How To Use

Erlotinib is available as a pill that must be swallowed. It's normally taken once a day on an empty stomach, at least 60 minute before or after a meal or snack. During your treatment, your doctor may reduce your erlotinib dose. This is dependent on how well the drug performs for you and whether or not you have any negative effects.

Precautions for Erlotinib

  • Tell your doctor about any prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and nutritional supplements you're taking or planning to take.
  • Your doctor may need to adjust your prescription dosages or keep a close eye on you for side effects.
  • If you're taking antacids, wait a few hours before or after you take erlotinib tablet to take them.
  • If you are receiving or have recently received chemotherapy or radiation therapy, tell your doctor. Also, if you have or have ever had lung illness, tell your doctor.
  • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, notify your doctor. You should not become pregnant while you are taking erlotinib tablet and for at least 1 month after your final dose. Erlotinib has the potential to harm the foetus.
  • If you're breastfeeding, let your doctor know. During your erlotinib treatment and for up to 2 weeks following your last dosage, you should not breastfeed.
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking erlotinib if you are having surgery, including dental surgery.
  • If you use tobacco products, notify your doctor. This medication's effectiveness may be reduced if you smoke cigarettes.

Erlotinib Tablet - Side Effects

  • Diarrhea, dry skin, muscle/joint pain, mouth sores, unusual eyelash growth, or dryness/redness of the eyes are all possible side effects.
  • Remember that your doctor provided this medication because he or she believes the benefit to you outweighs the risk of adverse effects. The majority of people who take this medicine do not have any substantial adverse effects.
  • If you have any serious side effects, such as persistent nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach/abdominal discomfort, yellowing of the eyes/skin, or dark urine, contact your doctor right away.
  • Erlotinib tablet can induce a minor rash that is usually not life-threatening.
  • This medicine rarely causes a severe allergic reaction. However, if you detect any symptoms of a major allergic response, such as a rash, itching/swelling, extreme dizziness, or problems breathing, seek medical treatment right away.
  • Contact your doctor if you have any other side effects not listed above.

Some Tips for Erlotinib

  • Erlotinib tablet is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer that has progressed to other parts of the body or is locally advanced.

  • Diarrhea is a possible side effect. Drink plenty of water and contact your doctor if the diarrhoea persists or if you notice blood in your stools.
  • Prevent pregnancy while taking this prescription and for a month after you stop using it by using a reliable contraceptive technique.
  • It makes your skin more susceptible to the sun. When going out, use sunscreen or wear protective apparel.
  • It is best to avoid smoking while taking this medication because it renders it ineffective and necessitates dose adjustments.
  • It should not be taken with any medication that lowers stomach acid (such as antacids or H2 blockers, including ranitidine), since it may interfere with the medication's effectiveness.
